Too many banks in Italy and in the Eurozone?

Macroeconomic evidence and recent research show that the number of banks in Italy and in the Euro Area is not excessive. Economies of scale are questioned, and key factors for profitability are capital, governance, strategies and local growth. Big players and small banks are both needed, with a tailored supervision.
