The agricultural sector in Italy is going through a complex period, due to the explosion of energy costs and the ongoing crisis. At the end of 2021, 5.5% of total bank loans were allocated to agriculture, forestry, and fisheries companies, for a total of 41 billion, while the sector accounts for only 2.2% of the total added value of the Italian economy. Agriculture now faces important new challenges: efficiency, culture, environmental sustainability. Therefore the role of banks and that of Italian and European institutions are essential, with new stimulus and guarantee measures and a modification of the European rules on default.
