The first Bancaria's special issue collects the best papers presented during the 2009 Wolpertinger conference - Rome. Selected articles, introduced by a preface by Franco Fiordelisi and Daniele Previati and a foreword by Edward Gardener (president of the Wolpertinger club), considers hot topics for the financial and banking sector in the last years.
  
Anjan Thakor points out the role of the banks' leverage policy on the current financial crisis; Sarkisyan, Casu, Clare and Thomas analyze the impact of the securitization on the banks' balance sheet; Quesada, Pastor and Serrano look the real estate price bubbles stressing its role in explaining the current financial crisis; Pittaluga and Seghezza demonstrate the advantages related to an independent supervisory authority; Bianchi, Signoretti, Ciavarella and Novembre consider the self-regulatory rules and show the limits relate to its effective implementation. Onado analyzes the De Laroisière proposal for the new regulatory framework.

Papers in an updated/revised version could be published elsewhere.
