New forecasts of Italian population: a downward adjustment

The new population forecasts issued by Istat adjust downeard the previous ones. The reasons behind this adjustment are the decline of fertility in the last year – more than expected, and, of course, the recent pandemic, which impacted on all demographic components. In this way, the new forecasts are based on a smaller population and this brought about a predicted sharper decline in the future years. The strong population decline is not alarming per se, but the related population ageing is something that we should worry about. Such ageing poses new challenges on policy, economics and social fields.
