The European payments landscape is characterized by significant fragmentation, with various effective local solutions and heterogeneity in cash penetration. In response, private and public initiatives aim to harmonize payments across Europe. Specifically, the regulation of instant payments could significantly increase the number of instant transactions, driving the transition towards real-time banking. To compete effectively and stand out in the new ecosystem, banks will need to adapt their systems and invest in innovative technologies and solutions. Payment service and infrastructure providers will play an important role, capturing some of the value and helping to shape the future of the industry.
