The work of Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson, winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, has made it possible to understand the complex interactions between economic development, technology, and institutions. The general picture they provide does not lead to easy optimism but neither does it lead to a «cosmic pessimism». The fundamental thesis is that prosperity is in the choices of men and that only the formation of inclusive institutions can guarantee prosperity and an equitable distribution of wealth. The three scholars demonstrated the importance of institutions in determining the level of development of a country, pointing out that societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that allow the exploitation of the population by a small elite do not generate growth but only strong social disparities.
