The figure of Paolo Baffi is closely linked to the history of the Bank of Italy, from the first experiences, after 1936, as «captain» of the Bank's team of young economists, to the role of Governor held from 1975 to 1979. But his story does not end with institutional activity, which has always been accompanied by intense scientific and academic work culminating in the teaching of History and monetary policy at Sapienza University in Rome. Baffi distinguished himself as a high educator and as a defender of the «general interest», in the wake of Luigi Einaudi; under his guidance, the supervisory activity was aimed at contrasting instability and degeneration in the banking field.
