Bank branches in Italy: trends, determinants and prospects

The debate on the presence of branches in Italy must consider both the quantitative dimension of the phenomenon and the determinants that have influenced its diffusion over the last thirty years. The evolution of bank branches in Italy presents similar dynamics to other European countries and significant differences between regions. This evolution depends on a set of factors: regulatory, socio-demographic, behavioural. Public strategies of social and economic support to geographically disadvantaged areas are desirable and the Pnrr represents an opportunity, as well as the use of technological innovations and the necessary regulatory adjustments, also to evolve POS with functions similar to Atms.
