In recent years, during the pandemic, bank deposits have increased significantly globally. Possible explanations include precautionary reasons and/or consumption slowdown. These represent considerable resources, that could be used to support consumption and investment, with the intervention of banks and central authorities. Indeed, financial resources should not be accumulated, but rather circulated. This is one of the cardinal principles of Islamic finance. An analysis of the most recent trends in Islamic deposits and of their underlying drivers seems to confirm its relevance.
