Banking supervision in Italy: an historical overview

The evolution of banking supervision in Italy, from the introduction of controls at the end of the nineteenth century until the recent establishment of the Single Supervisory Mechanism, has been characterized by the presence of common elements. In fact, every crisis occurred has led to a change of the supervisory framework to address the failure of the previous system. Today the main challenge for the Supervisory Authority regards the full implementation of the Banking Union and of an equilibrium between market and stability needs.
