Italian banks are now among the most solid and profitable in Europe, also because Italy is putting its budget in order. Strengthened by their renewed solidity, banks can and must contribute to bringing the Italian economy, within the framework of European capital market integration, to a more sustained level of growth. It is necessary to relaunch credit intermediation, especially in favour of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, the pillar of the production system, also through a more targeted use of public guarantee instruments. The main challenges include mobilising savings towards the real economy, seizing the opportunities of fintech and developing the digital euro.
