Gianni Toniolo, who died on November 13, was a prominent historian of the Italian economy, author of many fundamental works on the economy of the ’900s, on economic policy, banks and finance. He has taught at Cà Foscari in Venice, Rome Tor Vergata, Luiss and many foreign universities. A short time ago, on October 18, his last, important work was presented in Via Nazionale by distinguished scholars: the first volume of the «History of the Bank of Italy, 1893-1943», which was to be followed by the second volume on the second post-war period. We remember him by publishing here the speech that Pier Francesco Asso gave on that occasion.
