The paper examines the nexus between crypto-assets and the prevention of money laundering, with regard to the role of the banking sector in the context of the digital transformation of financial markets. After an overview of the size of the crypto market and the main risk profiles related above all to the integrity of the financial sector, the analysis focuses on the new European regulatory framework outlined by the MiCar Regulation and the Aml Package. The coherence profiles and application criticalities are highlighted, as well as the competitive and operational implications for banking intermediaries. Finally, the work underlines the contribution of banks to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism safeguards, and the need for a coordinated approach at European and international level, suitable for combining innovation, market integrity, and trust.
