Current and prospective Esg data – including on Smes – are now indispensable for the development of sustainable finance and transition finance solutions. Without them, there is a risk of giving a less sustainable representation of Italian Smes than in reality. Even the assessment of creditworthiness – when information on the Esg dimension is lacking – is moving towards greater prudence (other characteristics being equal). Providing banks, insurance companies and business partners with this information is now a necessity but also a cost for Smes. We need: a wider access to Esg data of administrative nature, standardization of basic Esg information for Smes, financial and professional resources for training and monitoring the Esg profiles of Smes, as well as investments in research for uniformly applicable institutional proxies.
