Ethics formulates behavioral principles: it is prescriptive. Economics studies production and distribution processes: it is analytical. Large companies are effective in achieving ethically relevant goals, where there are constraints. To guide them, it is necessary to define objectives, identify paths to achieve them, and prepare suitable resources and organizations. The Boards must decide on the basis of the expectations of the shareholders and all the other stakeholders. Goals of ethical relevance must be defined, compatible with the functioning of the economic system. A long-term vision is crucial, but corrections are inevitable, depending on the emergence of new institutional directions or constraints, market trends and changing social attitudes.
