Over the past decade, the academic interest on the relationship between finance and environment has grown considerably, in line with a movement that is gaining momentum in finance and demanding more responsibility for financial institutions and investors. At the same time, climate change and environmental issues are high on the international agendas. Based on a systematic literature review of more than 1.500 scientific works published between 1989 and 2022, this work aims to provide a global vision and a comprehensive map of research in the field of the finance for the environment, revealing the main research streams and assessing the growth and development of publications. We shed light on emerging key-themes and topics, as well as their similarities and differences, by identifying three distinct phases in this evolving knowledge domain. Finally, the study offers research directions by presenting an integrated framework that synthesizes the key insights from our research findings.
