Banking research in Italy is going through a path that deviates it from its Business economics roots and leads it to embrace hypotheses and methodologies typical of Economics studies. But adopting quantitative methods as the only legitimate tool of knowledge means misunderstanding Banking activity, being unable to assess its management, to identify its issues, to act to solve them and to predict future results (as the crisis has taught us). There is a need to rediscover the importance of qualitative research methods and to rebalance the dignity and weight accorded to different approaches and research tools. Finally, the knowledge of the bank brought by typical approaches of Business economics strengthens the relationship between the world of research and the business community.
