Reflecting on Dante’s political-economic ideas allows us to retrace in depth the great economic themes of yesterday and today, like the use of money and the creation of wealth, greed and frauds causing instability, the incorrect behavior of men and sovereigns. Finance still suffers from risks of instability, as demonstrated by the global financial crisis, which can only be countered by a supranational response. New dangers come from technological and financial innovation, as shown by the recent Wirecard and Greensill cases. Keynes’ lessons, against the myth of the invisible hand and the degenerations of an unstable and unequal capitalism, of a market economy that cannot be left at the mercy of itself, remain essential.
