The rapid pace of digital transformation is pushing the public and private sectors to find secure and convenient ways to establish identity for digital services. For the authorities, maintaining digital databases of citizens’ basic information and allowing third parties to interact with them is a necessary but costly and risky process. So far, the focus has been on centralising public databases, but the European Commission’s recent proposal on the eIdas Regulation now moves towards decentralised management of identity attributes via digital identity wallet. The involvement of the banking sector in this process will allow to achieve a full integration of the different national solutions based on eIdas through their standardization, to ensure a smooth customer experience in the use of digital identity wallets.
