Italians are prudent savers, mainly directed to mutual funds and government bonds; have a marked aversion to risk; try to avoid complex financial instruments and illiquid ones. In most cases, they move according to the advice of their bank and do not seem worried about the conflicts of interest that can affect its advisory activity. This is the identikit from the latest Consob survey on savings administered by intermediaries on behalf of retail customers in Italy, in which the composition of portfolios from June 2010 to June 2023 is examined. The study highlights the crucial role of banks in guiding their clients' investment choices and the importance to pursue the primary objective of customer interest in providing investment services.
