The Esg rating market is very heterogeneous: the different evaluations show low statistical correlation, due to the considerable discrepancy of the methodologies applied. The very concept of Esg rating is not sufficiently clear, in the absence of a regulatory definition, and the heterogeneity of Esg ratings can generate confusion among investors, increasing the difficulty of making objective assessments. These considerations lead to the need of introducing a European regulatory and supervisory system, providing for a definition of sustainability ratings and setting transparency obligations.
