Many recent studies have examined the actual impact of family policies aimed at countering demographic decline in the advanced economies of the West, including Italy. In addition to the traditional tools of childcare, leaves from work and monetary transfers, the basket of family policies also includes health and housing provisions. We present a selective review and an attempt to transpose in the Italian context the implications of the different results. The objective is twofold, on the one hand to identify an order of priority for the individual measures based on their relative effectiveness, and on the other hand to draw indications on what Italy can reasonably hope to achieve in the medium term.
