The evolution of bank branches in Italy: an international comparison

The debate on the presence of bank branches in Italy must consider both the quantitative dimension of the phenomenon and the determinants that have influenced its spread over the last 30 years. The evolution in Italy shows dynamics similar to other European countries, which often record greater reductions. This trend depends on a set of factors: regulatory, socio-demographic, behavioral. Public strategies of social and economic support for geographically disadvantaged areas are desirable, and the National Recovery Plan represents an opportunity, as well as the use of technological innovations and the necessary regulatory adjustments.
