Whatever their business model, banks need good governance; weak corporate governance is one of the main causes of crises. Extensive application of standards and active supervision have helped to avoid the contagion of the crises in Switzerland and the Usa in the Eu (including Italy). The gap between lending and deposit rates has increased bank profits after years of decline, but deposits are now facing competition from higher yielding instruments. Banks need to secure funding by offering competitive products to households. Accelerating technological innovation while minimizing risks also requires adequate governance and diversified skills.
