The history of the analysis of banks' profit and loss statement and that of their net interest income can teach many things from their origins. Net interest income, in particular, is a useful tool for analysing the banks' financial reports and the banking business and allows for a better understanding of their past, current and prospective structure, which is constantly evolving with ever changing contours. The proposed analysis, referring to the period 2008-2022, will show the multi-year trend of the variable «net interest income», also with reference to banks of different size and degree of specialisation. The analysis also proposes quantitative relationships between the net interest income and some additional business variables, such as total assets, risk-weighted exposures and the net intermediation margin.
