The bankruptcy in 1982 of Roberto Calvi's Banco Ambrosiano, decided by Nino Andreatta and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, gave rise to the Nuovo Banco Ambrosiano, in which four private banks with a 50% stake faced three public groups. After 15 difficult and risky years, the 1997 agreement between Banco Ambroveneto and Cariplo, reached after a broad and complex discussion, was of decisive importance in the history of Intesa Sanpaolo. Also because of the significant weight of Fondazione Cariplo in the governance of the bank, always in perfect agreement in all strategic decisions. Allowing the two major final steps: the integration of Comit and the merger with Sanpaolo Imi.
