The Italian Banking Association and the Luigi Einaudi Institute for Banking, Financial and Insurance studies have promoted the publication of the book Italia, Europa, economia e banche that collects the speeches of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi (1920-2016), as Governor of the Bank of Italy (from 1981 to 1992) and Minister of the Treasury (from 1996 to 1998), at the annual meetings of ABI. The volume was presented in Rome on 10 April 2018 by Antonio Patuelli, President of ABI, Maurizio Sella, President of the Einaudi Institute, Pierluigi Ciocca, Economist, Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, President of Intesa Sanpaolo, Ignazio Visco, Governor of the Bank of Italy. The speeches are published in the following pages.
The speakers recalled the character of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi who, as Governor of the Bank of Italy, Prime Minister, Minister of the Treasury and, finally, President of the Italian Republic, has been a leading protagonist for over thirty years of Italian history. Ciampi was a man of the institutions and a devout believer in the European project. He prepared the ground for Italy to become a founder member of Europe’s monetary union and stressed the need to apply greater discipline to public finances. He also initiated the construction of a modern banking and financial sector, intervening in depth on its structure to make Italian banks more and more efficient and competitive in Europe.
