The earliest central banks were established in the seventeenth century. As of now, there are over 180 of them around the world, and very few have gone out of business. But the nature of the business has evolved through time. Alessandro Roselli's thought-provoking history explores the role of a central bank in a liberal society by describing why central banks were set up, and how their functions and responsibilities, and their relations with governments, have changed as the world has changed. He concentrates on the central banks of Britain, Italy and the United States. Whatever else may have happened, the central banks have kept going, one way or another.
