In January 1977 Arcuti, then Director General of Istituto bancario San Paolo di Torino, sent these critical and selfcritical assessments of the functioning of the financial system to three important exponents of the system itself (Francesco Cingano from Bci, Enrico Cuccia from Mediobanca and Paolo Baffi, Governor of the Bank of Italy). Arcuti shows that he knows in depth the problems of the industry and the possible, albeit difficult, remedies; below are published the answers of the respondents. It should be noted that the debate is about issues that were already well identified at that time, and that will remain for many years at the heart of Italian banks strategies.
